Background
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
There are letters from a Matthew's in the State Library of New South Wales 1853-55. One dated 15 January 1854 describes a large ttent used for worship near Matthew's abode in Cornish Town. "There is a large Tent erected for a place of worship not far from us. Its dimensions are 46 feet in length by 36 feet i breadth". He goes on to write that "I believe there are 100's here who will end their days her and of retrobate character, who are drinking, swearnig and fighting, who do not fear God or regard Man. But there are 100's here who are thoughtful and industrious men, who I believe will do well".[1]
