James Heffernan was born 1828 the son of Roger and Ellen Heffernan. He married Kate. He died at Kyneton in February 1909, aged 81 years. James Heffernan died in April 1909.[1] He is buried in Kyneton Cemetery ((K 10 12).

Heffernan took part in the defence of Eureka Stockade. He was said to have carried Peter Lalor to a place of safety.[2]
