NARACOORTE, November 27—

Mr. H. Melbourne, who died on Monday from the effects of a gig accident, was born on June 8, 1834, in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. He entered on a seafaring career, and visited many parts of the world, ultimately arriving at Hobson's Bay in the ship Nelson in the fifties. He made his way to the goldfields, and worked at many mining centres in Victoria. He was at Ballarat at the time of the Eureka Stockade riots. He came to Narracoorte in 1856. For some time he was employed on Hynarn station, and for 15 or 16 years conducted a carrying business between. Narracoorte, Robe, and. Portland. He was married in 1860, and his wife died 16 years ago. He entered the service of the District Council in 1880, and remained in their employ as a dayman till the time of his death. There are seven children— Mr. W. C. Melbourne, of Hyde Park, Adelaide (secretary of the Typographical Society)*, Mr, J. A. Melbourne (Narracoorte), the Rev. A. H. Melbourne (Port Adelaide), Mr. D. A. Melbourne (Houghtou), Mrs. W. Shoebridge (Mount Barker), Mrs. A. G. Brownlees, of Malvern, and Miss Melbourne, 'of1 Narracoorte. Mrs. J. M. Carozzi (Mount Gambier), and Mr. ft. Hutchens (Albany) are stepchildren. Mr. Melbourne was a foundation member of the ? Loyal Mosquito Plains Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., 48 years ago. He passed through the chairs and was a trustee. He was one of the original directors of the Albert District Caledonian Society 17 years ago. He was an old member of the Masonic Lodge. He was full of activity, and was a familia figure in Narracoorte for years.
