On 01 August 1853 Governor Charles La Trobe had been presented with a monster petition seeking immediate reform of government administration. The thirteen metre petition contained thousands of signatures collected throughout the Victorian goldfields. It was couched in Chartist terms, and caused Governor Charles La Trobe to write to London warning of political unrest. [1]

Dr Harry Hambrook was a member of the Castlemaine Goldfields Reform League.
