- "STOCKADE POET'S" DEATH. EGERTON, Tuesday - Mr George Hartley, a veteran of the Eureka Stockade, has died at Egerton, aged 86 years. He was a native of Pennsylvania he arrrived in Ballarat
in 1853, and the following year was one of the participants in the Eureka Stockade riot. In the conflict he sustained a slight wound in the arm. On the 50th anniversary of the fight, held at Ballarat, Mr Hartley received the title of the 'Stockade Poet'.[1]
