Eureka Diorama
Background
In November 1968 Ballarat's Rotary Cup Walkathon was held to raise money to erect a life-size diorama at the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park. George Wilmot, President of the Rotary Club of Ballarat explained that 22 Rotarians had volunteered to walk distances from one mile to 15 miles. Mr Wilmot said many tourists had been disappointed at the lack of historic information at the world famous stockade, [1]
A $7,000 grant for a Eureka Diorama was approved by the Premier, Sir Henry Bolte, in April 1969. The $2 to $1 grant, with $3,500 raised by the 1968 walkathon organised by the combined Rotary clubs of Ballarat. The diorama project was the first joint community project by the three Rotary clubs of Ballarat.[2]
The Mayor, Cr M.J. Brown, officially turned the first sod for the diorama in August 1969.[3] The diorama was opened on 09 December 1970.[4]
