STOCKADE RESERVE

Arbor Day at the Eureka Stockade Reserve on Saturday last proved a pleasant outing for the Stockade Improvement Committee. Amongst those present were the Hon. R. McGregor, the Mayor of the Town (Cr W. Hoare), Cr McKenzie, president and members of the Ballarat East Natives’ Association, and others. Apologies were received from Crs Elsworth and Pittard. The work started with the ladies of the Eureka committee planting a tree each on the south side of the reserve. The A.N.A. took the north side and planted various kids of wattle. At the invitation of the ladies all adjourned to the rotunda for tea and refreshments. The Hon. R. McGregor, in the course of a brief address, said they should encourage the young to take an interest in tree planting. The Mayor of the Town complimented the Stockade committee on the improved state of the reserve, and expressed the hope committees would be formed in other parts of the Town to follow their example. The president of the Natives’ Association (Mr. p. Moore) said the Government and councils should do all in their power to encourage tree-planting on the waste lands about the towns, as they would be a very valuable asset in years to come. Cr McKenzie and Mr Stark also spoke. Mr W. Carey, president of the Stockade committee, stated that about £500 had been spent on the reserve, but it would require a lot more before it would be as would like to see it.

The planting was done under the supervision of Mr J.S. Edwards, curator of the Gardens.
