William Smith, a member of the Victorian Government, arranged for the graves of the soldiers at the Ballarat Cemetery to be tidie and an obelisk memorial erected by the Government of Victoria. Soon after this enough money was raised by provate subscription to repair the enclosure around the diggers grave.
