In 1994 the University of Ballarat presented a conference to celebrate the 140th Anniversary of Eureka. the first day of the conference reflected on the significance of Eureka, with the second day considering Eureka in the present and future. The program included two special exhibitions at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery and the Gold Museum.

The conference keynote address was delivered by the Hon. Barry Jones, M.H.R., A.O., Member for Lalor in the House of representatives since 1977, National President of the Australian Labor Party, former Minister for Science who stimulated national thinking about the future of Australia through contributions such as Sleepers, Wake (1982)..
