‘EUREKA STOCKADE’ NEW MARCH AT BAND SUNDAY

It is appropriate that a new march, “Eureka Stockade”, will be a feature of Band Sunday to be held by the Creswick District Brass Band at Creswick on Sunday. That day is the anniversary of the “affair at Eureka”. The march was composed by Stewart Cairns, a former Ballarat resident, now living in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Mr Cairns sent the composition to a member of the band and Bandmaster Tom Ross decided that the anniversary of the Eureka Stockade uprising would be a fitting time for the first public performance of the march. Thirteen bands will take part in Sunday’s program which includes a street march, in which bands will be judged on drill when competing for the Creswick Shield given by Mr Keith Ryall. At Hammon Park recitals will be given by groups of bands. There will also be novelty events and the program will end with a march by the massed bands. The Apex Club of Creswick will assist the local band in the conduct of the day’s events. Mr Jack Marchingo, secretary of the Victorian Bands League, will be judge of the street march and later will lead the massed bands march.

It is expected that there will be many band officials among the thousand or more visitors the Creswick band officers hope will attend.[1]
