Background

THE EUREKA STOCKADE FLAG.
BALLARAT, Sunday.
Regarding the statement that the flag that was unfurled over the Eureka stockade prior to the engagement between the diggers and the military in the early morning of the 3rd December. 1854, was made by the late Mr. W. A. G. Fraser, who, as reported in "The Age," died a few days ago, Mr. S. E. Edwards, J.P., of the Ballarat Stock Exchange, says there appears to be a misunderstanding regarding the matter. Mr. Edwards' claims to have been the maker of the flag, and says the work was executed at his tent shop in the Main-road. Three flags were made for the diggers by Mr. Edwards and his partner, the late Mr. Davis. Mr. Edwards states he has good reason to remember the stockade flag, as the insurgents, in the subsequent excitement, forgot to pay for it.[1]
