Background
West was born in England, and arrived in Australia in 1852. He first dug for gold at Gravel Pits.[1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Edward West was at the Eureka Hotel when James Scobie was attacked, but left soon after to collect his wife in Melbourne. While he was away the Eureka Hotel was burnt down.[2]

I slept over the dining-room; went to bed about twelvo o'clock; was aroused about one by a hammering at the front door. Hance said it was a drunken man. I went to bed again, and, having been digging In the day, was tired and went to sleep, and heard no more.[3]
West applied for compensation for the loss of musical instruments, clothing and music books after the Burning of James Bentley’s Eureka Hotel. The claim of £35.6.8 was allowed.[4]
Post 1854 Experiences
West was residing in Eureka Street, Ballarat East, in the 1880s.[5]
