Background

Edmund Strange arrived in Australia with his wife, four sons and three daughters, on the Shropshire in 1848. He was working as a carpenter at Geelong before becoming one of the first prospectors, along with his mate John Parling, on the Ballarat field soon after gold was first discovered at Poverty Point in August 1851.[1]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Edmund Strange was an eyewitness to the Eureka Stockade[2]. During the battle he was standing on Pennyweight Hill.[3]

Family

Edmund Strange was the grandfather of Ballarat born local historian Bert Strange.[4]
