Corner of Sturt and Doveton Streets, Ballarat 1861,
Solomon & Bardwell, photographers, State Library of Victoria (H2060)

Named after Francis Doveton, the first Commissioner appointed to the Victorian Goldfields.

Doveton Street North runs parallel to Lydiard Street, but unlike Lydiard Street that terminates at the Ballarat New Cemetery, Doveton Street North continues on the west side of the cemetery towards Invermay (a suburb that was originally named 'Dead Horse'). Doveton Street South begins at Skipton Street, converging with Armstrong Street at South Street.[1]

There is also a Doveton Street in Castlemaine.
