Background
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Campbell was in the crowd that rescued a miner in police custody on 30 November 1854 during the lead up to the Eureka Stockade. He was said to have had a stone in each hand. He was later arrested on 30 November 1854 after the riot at the Gravel Pits. He was tried, along with John Chapman, Benjamin Ewinds, Duncan McIntyre, William Bryant and George Goddard. All pleaded not guilty to the charge of sedition and riot. Goddard was defended by Mr Cope and Mr Prendergast. [1]
