TO THE EDITOR.

—Yours, &c., W. B. WITHERS. 2 Lyons street south, eve of 38th anniversary of the day.

SIR,— Apropos of " Ballarat Chronicles," let me say that since the chronicles were concluded two persons hare claimed to be the makers of one or more flags for the insurgents at the Eureka Stockade. Mrs Morgan, of Wendouree Parade north, then wife of Mr Walker, of Darton and Walker, tentmakers claim to have made "the flag.” meaning the flag which the troopers took on the day of the fight Darton and Walker’s store was on the east side of Main street, near to or on the site of late Gregory's grocery store. Walker was drowned in Smythe's Creek, and his widow became Mrs Morgan. Mr Owen Edwards, the sharebroker, tells me that when he and his late partner Davies had their store as tent makes, at the corner of Main and Humffray streets, where the post office is now, he made three flags for the stockaders. He does not, however, claim that "the flag" was one of the three, and he thinks that nobody can now tell who made "the flag.” As to the troopers’ trophy, your readers know already that it has been said that it was carried to the western district, and was not long since held by a settler in the Wimmera district. Officials connected with the Old Colonists' Association have applied to the alleged holder of the trophy for its presentation to the O.C. A., to be kept by the association among other relics in the good keeping of that old veteran body, but no satisfactory response has been obtained by the association.[1]
