Background

Zilles was born in 1825 in 1826 at Maintz, Hesse-Dormstadt, Germany. He arrived Victoria 21 August 1853.[1] on the Wilhelmsburg.[2] Zilles married Mary Finegan at Ballarat in 1861.[3] Conrad Zilles died on 06 August 1887 at Ballarat, and was buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. [4]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Zilles was present at the Eureka Stockade battle, and according to his obituary in the Ballarat Star newspaper he was one of the last to leave. Zilles was one of those who tried to locate the site of the Eureka Stockade in 1884. [5]

Post 1854 Experiences

He is thought to have settled around Creswick in c1853 to c1858, moving to Linton from c1866 to c1881, and Ballarat from c1881 to 1887. [6] Zilles was the licensee of the Adelphi Hotel (Now Golden City) in Sturt Street, Ballarat. [7]
