Colt revolvers were percussion cap weapons. Colts in use on the Victorian goldfields in 1854 were the Pocket Colt - a .31 calibre 1849 model; the .36 calibre 1951 model known as the Navey Colt.; and the .44 calibre Walker Colt of 1848. [1]

The colt could misfire and were not very accurate unless at close range.[2]

Many Yankee miners arrived armed with their own Colt percussion revolvers, which many appeared to be the large 1848 model .44 calibre Dragoon, plus their own Bowie knives. One such American was Charles Ferguson, who with about 30 other Yankees fought at the battle of the Eureka Stockade and called themselves The Independent Californian Rangers Revolver Brigade. These Americans are said to have fired the first shots of the battle.[3]

James McGill carried a Walker Colt. [4]
