Clyde company

Seven interesting and influential Scottish men founded the Clyde Company in 1836. Under the management of George Russell it was proposed to operate in the Port Phillip District of New South Wales (now known as Victoria). Russell's half brother, resident in Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania) was also a partner. Like the Australian Agricultural Company, it was a pastoral venture. By 1857-58 the initial investment of 15,000 pounds had grown to a quarter of a million.[1]

Clyde Company Papers

P. L. Brown published the Narrative of George Russell in 1935. He then published in 1941 the first volume of the Clyde Company Papers(Oxford University Press) that had survived almost intact. By 1971 the seventh and final volume Epilogue 1859-1873 was released. It has been commended as one of the most comprehensive documents of early Port Phillip, comparable to the unpublished Niel Black papers, that are held at LaTrobe Library.[2]
