In the News

THE license of the Pig and Whistle Hotel in Cobalt-street [Broken Hill] has within the past few days passed out of the hands of Mr. W. H. Newton into those of Mr. Charles Pilcher, late of Railway Town. Mr. Pilcher is a man with a history. He has been by turns an officer on a merchant vessel, an in-structor in gunnery on a man-of-war, a miner, a Labor agitator, and a mining manager. He took an active part in the agitation which led to the " Ballarat Riot" of 1854, being then resident of an adjacent township. Mr. Pilcher has earned a good reputation as a licensed victualler, and his new venture will no doubt be attended with commensurate success.[1]
