Obituary

Another of the pioneer residents of this district passed away on Sunday last, in the person of Mr Charles Edwin Watson, who expired at the age of 71 years after a very protracted illness. The deceased who was a native of Dittsham, Devonshire, Engl;and was an old colonist, as he came to Victoria 40 years ago, and saw the stirring times at Ballarat which culminated in the Eureka Riots. He followed the occupation of a miner until comparatively speaking recent times and after leaving Ballarat was a for a time at Beaufort (then Fiery Creek) and came on to Ararat, where he has since resided, at the time of the Canton Rush. He worked at the Convention Claim with the Hon. W. McLellan and the Late Hon. John Woods.

Of late years fortune did not smile sweetly upon his efforts and he was appointed as caretaker of the langi-Ghiran waterworks, which position he filled for some time, but failing health compelled him to relinquish the post and he has since lived on the Picnic Gully Road.
