Background
Charles A. Doudiet was born in 1832 in Geneva, Switzerland, the son of Rev. Jacques-Frederic Doudiet, who moved to Canada with his family in 1844 to take up a position with the French Canadian Missionary Society. [1] Doudiet died at Hollowell, Massachusetts, United States of America on 13 June 1913.[2]
After moving to New York Charles Doudiet sailed to Port Phillip on the Magnolia in 1852.[3] With Captain B. W. Tucker at the helm the Magnolia departed New York on 27 July 1852 arriving at Port Phillip on 24 November 1852. On page six of the shipping list, is recorded: Doudiet, Charles, Country of birth, Switzerland; age 20; Last legal residence Canada; Country naming allegiance British; Occupation carpenter; Baggage 1 chest, 12 bags (or maybe 2 bags).[4]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Doudiet may have been a participant at the Stockade on 3 December 1854 and his notes record that he helped carry the dying Captain Charles Ross to the Free Trade Hotel on the 05 December 1854. [5] He refers to himself as one of those who carried the injured Ross and was with him when he died. [6]
He sketched eye-witness sketches of the burning of James Bentley’s Eureka Hotel, and other Eureka Stockade related scenes.[7]
Post 1854 Experiences
Doudiet's last artwork completed in Ballarat is dated February 1853. He left Australia for Canada where he married Liza. Four children were born in Quebec, Canada. He was ordained a Presbyterian Minister in Montreal in 1869.[8]
