Obituary

MRS. BRIGID HANLON
The death of Mrs. Brigid Mary Hanlon, of Page-avenue, Port Melbourne, occurred after a few weeks' illness at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Cullinan, Chrystobel-Cresent Hawthorn. The deceased lady was born at Black Lead nearly 90 years ago, the place being then an important part of the rich Ballarat goldfield. Both of her parents, along with immediate relatives, reached the field about the time the early rich discoveries were being made. In the outstanding event of that period — the Eureka Stockade — six members of their domestic circle took part, two of them being killed in the historic engagement. At the beginning of her married life in the gold centre of Creswick, she was an eye-witness of the tragic scenes around the Australasia Mine disaster, where 22 miners were drowned by the inrush of flood water. Her husband, Mr. Christopher Hanlon, as mine engineer, controlled operations which reduced the waters rapidly enough for the mine rescue to recover in safety the greater portion of the imprisoned men. Afterwards, the late Mrs. Hanlon spent some years at Leongatha (Gippsland), resided for a considerable time in Ballarat, and, during the latter portion of her life, lived at Garden City, Port Melbourne. In all places she was held in the deepest affection by members of the Catholic community and by her numerous friends in other spheres. The late Mrs. Hanlon was predeceased by her husband in 1924. She is survived by three sons and two married daughters, her youngest son, Pte. Wm. F. Hanlon, was killed in France in April, 1918. Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Hawthorn, on Saturday, October 19, by Very Rev. J. S. Bourke, S.J. Afterwards, the interment took place at the Burwood Cemetery, where the prayers at the graveside were read by Rev. Fr. Gleeson, assisted by Rev. P. J. Harper, S.J.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag
