- This intensely interesting item follows closely on the death at Maclean of Archibald William Stout, aged 108. who, although born in the Isle of Skye, came to Australia as a child. EUREKA STOCKADE. He had been a miner and was present at the Eureka Stockade at Ballarat, December 3, 1854; It seemed incredible that anyone could now be living who was present at that historic pitched battle between 270 military and police and over 200 miners, when 26 persons were killed, yet such was the case.[1]
- SYDNEY, Thursday.-Archibald William Stout, reported to be 106 years old, died at Maclean on the north coast yesterday. Mr. Stout, who was a bachelor, came to Australia from Scotland with his parents in the late 1830s. He was engaged in mining in his early days, and was present at the Eureka Stockade.[2]
