Obituary
- One of the last survivors of the Eureka Stockade affair has passed away through the death of Mr. Alexander Garden, of Waitahuna (N.Z.). After his stirring experiences in Victoria, Mr. Garden left for New Zealand, on the news of the gold discoveries at Gabriel's Gully, and he settled at the adjoining and equally rich Waitahuna Gully. He became a personality in the district, both as a successful business man and as an outstanding church worker. For 38 years he held continuous office (34 years as treasurer) in the Waitahuna Pres. byterian Church, now under the charge of a former Victorian minister, the Rev. J. S. Ponder. One of Mr. Garden's last acts was to start a movement to build a new church, with a gift of £100.[1]
