Background
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Bourke was a miner residing at Ballarat when he signed the Benden Hassell Petition in 1856. [1]
Post 1854 Experiences
James Bourke petitioned the government:
That on Sunday morning the third day of December last my tent with all the property therein to the value of one hundred pounds was set on fire to and destroyed immediately after the attack of the Military and Police on the Stockade at Eureka aforesaid thereby causing extreme hardship and suffering to your Petitioner and his family.
That your Petitioner too no part in the Riot directly or indirectly which has already been declared before the Gold Fields Commission.
Your Petitioner therefore humbly prays Your Excellency to grant him compensation for the loss of his property.
And your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray.
