James Stowe was a member of the 40th Regiment and was involved in the Indian Mutiny, Maori war, and Eureka Stockade.[2]

- MUIR.-On the 28th July, killed in action in France, Private Leopold C. J. Muir, dearly beloved eldest son of Archibald and Grace Muir, of 15 Newry street, North Fitzroy, grandson of the late James Stowe, late of Her Majesty's 40th Regiment, brother of Millie, Theodore (on active service), Elma, Hazel, Lizzie, Louie, and Neil, aged 24 years 8 months. New Zealand papers please copy. Thy will be done.[4]
- STOWE.-On the 5th September, 1918 at her residence, 62 Gold street, Collingwood, Mary Ann, relict of the late James Stowe (formerly of 40th Regiment, Indian Mutiny, Maori war, and Eureka Stockade), loved mother of Thomas (musician, Queensland), William (New Zealand), Elizabeth (Mrs. Nelson, of Wellington. New Zealand), Grace Mary- Mrs. Muir, North Fitzroy), aged 81 years.[5]
