Sophia Marks was the wife of Thomas Marks. According to her obituary she took part in the Eureka Riots. The date given in her obituary of 1855 may be incorrect.
The many friends of Mrs Sophia Marks, wife of Mr Thomas Marks, of Ligar Street, Ballarat North, will regret to hear that she died at her residence on Thursday morning from dropsy, at the age of 60 years. The deceased arrived on Ballarat early in 1855, but came to the colony some time prior, and was eyewitness of, and participator in, the riots at Eureka in company of the husband, both being rather conspicuous figures in connection with digging affairs at that period. Mrs Marks leaves an adult family as follows:- Mr George Henry Marks, watchmaker, Bridge Street; Mrs Harry Dunstan, Humffray Street; Mrs James Gordon, Ballarat East Post Office; Mrs Chadwick, Bolwarra; Mrs Walton, Comet Saw Mills, Gippsland; and Mrs Kenyon, Talbot. The funeral will move from her late residence, near New Cemetery, today, as announced elsewhere, at 2p.m.
