Justin Edward Daniel MacCarthy was born in 1823.[1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Justin MacCarthy was an officer of the 40th Regiment. It is not currently known ifg MacCarthy was in Ballarat in December 1854, but he painted an image of the Governement Camp. The 40th Regiment was based in Melbourne from 1852 to 1860, and soldiers were routinely posted to Ballarat during this period. The Government Camp was one of the most important locations in the history of the Eureka Stockade a. The Camp was established in 1851 to help maintain order on the newly-discovered Victorian gold fields and was in a strategic position with a view of Ballarat Flat.
