Obituary

DEATH OF A BALLARAT PIONEER,

There died at Balaclava, Melbourne, on 21st July, Mr M'Lennan, a Ballarat man of the early fifties, who will be remembered by many old Ballarat residents. Mr M'Lennan arrived in Victoria in 1851, and from Melbourne, he went to Bendigo, and after a short time there he proceeded to Ballarat. His tent was pitched in the immediate vicinity of the Eureka Stockade, and during the stirring times of the trouble of December '54, he fortified the walls of it with bags of flour. He took no part in the Stockade action, though he was a personal friend of the late Hon. P. Lalor. After the action he found that the bags of flour had stopped many a bullet. It was Mr M'Lennan who warned Messrs Lalor and Kennedy that there was a price upon their heads, and he directed them down towards the old wood-shed, as the best -way to avoid the police. On that occasion Kennedy gave him a note to deliver to Mrs Kennedy, and this commission he faithfully fulfilled.Mr M'Lennan was one of the first to put a pick in the ground of the old Albion mine, and had an interest in the Guiding Star, Golden Gate, Prince of Wales, Bonshaw, and other mines of the early alluvial days. During his mining, career he amassed a handsome competency; but, like a good many others of the time, he spent most of it in the industry-in which he won it. For some years prior to his death, Mr M'Lennan lived privately at his residence, Valetta, Empress road, Balaclava. He was 71 years old when he died, succumbing to internal inflammation. Mr M'Lennan leaves a widow and grown-up family of three sons and two daughters. The sons are Mr Duncan M'Lennan, general merchant, of Kyneton, Mr John K M'Lennan, of the Railway Department; and Mr Alex N M'Lennan, commercial traveller, Sydney. The deceased gentleman died most peace-fully, giving direct testimony to his acceptance of the Saviour of the world as his personal Saviour. <refKyneton Guardian, 26 July 1894.</ref>
