Background

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

A EUREKA REMINISCENCE. From E. Thomson, Parkside: — "The reference to the late C. S. Baillie, contractor, of Adelaide, reminds, me of, a tale told to me by Mr. Baillie many years ago of the way in which the late Peter Lalor, of Ballarat stockade fame, evaded capture, When shot, Lalor, for whom a reward had been offered, made his way to Melbourne, and was hidden in the 'Baillie Brothers' workshop, Flinders street, Melbourne, where he was attended by a doctor in clergyman's garb early and late, after the workmen had left work."[1]
